Welcome to National Pet Month’s very first blog. Over the coming weeks we'll be telling you all about this year's campaign, which takes place from April 1 - May 6, 2013 and explaining how YOU can be a part of it.
National Pet Month is all about promoting responsible pet ownership across the UK and raising money for local pet charities – not just during the campaign April 1 – May 6, 2013, but all year round.
At the heart of everything we do is the welfare and well being of our pets - those extended family members who give us so much in terms of love and companionship and yet expect so little in return.
Whether we own a dog, cat or horse, fish, rabbit, lizard, spider or anything in between, we all have a duty of care to any pet that shares its life with us.
And that’s why it’s so important that we do all we can to look after our pets responsibly and encourage fellow pet owners to do the same.
Over the coming weeks in the lead up to National Pet Month we’ll be sharing with you some of the success stories of National Pet Month in previous years, including features on some of the charities helped, as well as showing you how you can become a National Pet Month supporter and why it’s so important, plus providing you with Top 10 Tips to help you look after your pet.
We’ll also be telling you more about this year’s theme – Your Pets and You: companions for life.
Look out for guest blogs from some of our sponsors, including Companion Care Vets and Pets At Home and interviews with some of our celebrity supporters as they talk about life with their pets.
In order to make this year’s event bigger and better than ever we need YOUR help.
Show your support by staging and attending fundraising events for your local pet charity, encourage schools, veterinary practices and other businesses to organise National Pet Month projects and competitions and help us spread the word on important pet ownership issues.
Register as a supporter on the National Pet Month website www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk and you’ll receive a free events pack featuring information on NPM’s key messages plus posters and tips on how to successfully publicise your event.
We can then promote your event on the National Pet Month interactive map www.nationalpetmonth.org.uk/events/ which will be regularly updated throughout this year’s campaign.
National Pet Month, which began as National Pet Week in 1989, is a registered charity and grows more popular each year, with thousands helping to spread the key messages of responsible pet ownership, the mutual benefits of living with pets, the role of pet care specialists and the value of working and assistance companion animals.
The UK has long been recognised as a nation of animal lovers. Latest statistics* suggest that 48% of UK households have at least one pet. That’s 13 million homes around the country.
Let’s all work together to make sure those pets and those awaiting homes receive the love and care they deserve. Join us for National Pet Month – April 1 – May 6, 2013 and let’s make a difference.
