Looking for fun ways to keep your pet active without spending a fortune? You’re not alone. Guinea Pigs need regular exercise and mental stimulation, but that doesn’t mean you have to splash out on pricey toys or specialist gear. With a bit of imagination (and a few things you’ve probably already got lying around the house), you can create safe, fun workouts that keep your Piggie healthy and entertained. Here are a few, fun suggestions.
Guinea Pigs might be small, but they’re so full of curiosity.
A few paper bags stuffed with hay or crinkled paper can become an adventure playground for these cute animal companions.
Try adding in a couple of toilet roll tubes with veggies tucked inside and you’ve got an enrichment session on a shoestring budget.
Piggies also love low-level hidey holes and tunnels which are easy to make with cardboard or fleece.
Even if your piggie prefers a slower pace, introducing a gentle maze or a pop-up tent can encourage exploration.
Use books, shoe boxes or bits of cardboard propped upright to make the maze and build the treasure trail with little hidden rewards along the way. Just ensure you keep the walls low so they don’t feel trapped.
You can even use a small, children’s mesh play tent or a folded up fabric tunnel as a safe play zone where they can scurry in and out. Just make sure whatever you use has soft, non-slip flooring and good ventilation.
The key to all this is gentle interaction. Let them lead the way and they’ll enjoy the attention and routine.
Try at least one of these home ‘workout’ activities on a regular basis and it will keep your Guinea Pig mentally and physically active - an easy, but effective way to avoid boredom and strengthen that human-animal bond.
